New program to improve living conditions for foreign workers in Cyprus

New program to improve living conditions for foreign workers in Cyprus

The Cyprus government is taking new steps to address the issue of providing housing for foreign workers. The Ministry of Interior is drafting a new directive that will regulate the design and construction of collective housing complexes for short- and medium-term accommodation of workers.

According to the new directive, such residential complexes will be aimed at accommodating employees of enterprises and organizations associated with the main sectors of the economy. The directive assumes the following features:

  • Minimum room sizes : Each bedroom must have a certain minimum area.
  • Common facilities : mandatory availability of a bathroom, shared kitchen and living room to accommodate up to eight people.
  • Flexibility in choosing zones : construction of such complexes will be possible in residential, industrial and other areas where residential development is permitted.

Minister Constantinos Ioannou noted that the implementation of such projects will allow:

  1. Reduce the burden on the existing residential property market by freeing up individual residential properties for local residents.
  2. To improve the quality of living conditions for workers by eliminating the problem of overcrowded dormitories.
  3. To accelerate the development of affordable housing through incentive measures implemented with the participation of the Cyprus Organisation for Land Development (KOAG).

KOAG continues to play an important role in implementing government policy. The organization actively uses the provided urban planning incentives to increase the number of affordable housing units, both for sale and for rent.

These measures create conditions for a more balanced real estate market, providing decent living conditions for foreign workers. At the same time, this contributes to the stability and development of the main sectors of the Cyprus economy.
