03.08.2022

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) has signed the Charter for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).

The purpose of the Charter, according to a press release from the CBC, is to become a means of recognizing and implementing the principle of equal opportunity and diversity in every working environment of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and the Single Supervisory Mechanism. (SSM).

CBC Governor Konstantinos Herodotou signed the Charter after it had been approved by the CBC Board of Directors. “By signing the Charter on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, we are putting into practice our commitment to creating a positive and participatory work environment,” Herodotou said.

He added that diversity in central banks “is directly related to increasing productivity, attracting talent, encouraging innovation and creativity, and reinforcing our values.”

He noted that with this initiative “we emphasize that everyone plays an equally active role, is fully respected and benefits from the inclusive environment that we are promoting both at the level of the European Central Bank and at the level of the Central Bank of Cyprus.”

The charter, formally presented by the ECB, is a public commitment of a voluntary nature and reflects a common vision to eliminate discrimination and increase integration into the working culture of the ESCB and SSM, according to a press release.

It sets out a set of principles and commitments that reflect the fundamental rights of the EU to adopt a strategy that takes into account diversity and equality, the press release adds.

To date, the Statute has been signed by the President of the ECB, the Central Bank Governors of the ESCB, as well as the national competent authorities of the Single Supervisory Mechanism.
