Wine in Cyprus

Wine in Cyprus

Cyprus is renowned worldwide not only for its beaches but also for its incredibly delicious wines. The island has all the conditions for growing grapes, and for thousands of years, Cypriots have been involved in winemaking, creating not just beverages but true masterpieces!

Cypriot fortified wines are particularly famous, known for their stunningly rich flavor, intense aroma, and pleasant aftertaste. However, other types of Cypriot wines are also very popular, not only among the locals but also among discerning foreign connoisseurs.

Cyprus is home to numerous vineyards, and many Cypriot families are engaged in the winemaking business. This industry is one of the mainstays of the country’s economy and a source of employment on the island. It is challenging to find authentic Cypriot wine in Russia due to very limited exports to the country. In fact, 95% of the wine produced in Cyprus is consumed on the island, with only a small portion being exported. Therefore, if you plan to visit Cyprus, be sure to schedule a tour of a local winery or visit a wine shop. When else will you have the chance to taste genuine Cypriot wine? Moreover, it is sold here at very affordable prices.

Let’s take a closer look at the different types of Cypriot wines and note which ones you might want to try first.

White wine in Cyprus

When choosing white wine, people usually prefer a dry or semi-sweet drink with a pleasant aftertaste. Cyprus has some very respectable options in these categories. The most famous white wines are made from the local Xynisteri grape. Each type of wine has its unique flavor profile, depending on the preparation method and ingredients.

If you enjoy something delicate and subtle, try “Aphrodite” – a beautiful wine that pairs perfectly with cheese or fish. If you prefer something fruity, you might like “Petritis” – a dry wine with a light fruity aftertaste and a rich vanilla aroma. It is aged in barrels for at least seven months! If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to try “Bellapais” – a semi-sweet sparkling wine that is served with fruits.

Red wine in Cyprus

The most famous wine on the island is undoubtedly “Commandaria.” It is considered one of the oldest beverages and a signature of Cyprus. This noble wine is made from a blend of red and white grapes, which are harvested late in the autumn when they are filled with the maximum amount of sugar. The wine is aged in barrels for a minimum of 2.5 years. An interesting fact: “Commandaria” contains no added alcohol! It has an intriguing and unforgettable taste with notes of nuts, raisins, and dried fruits.

Rosé wine in Cyprus

Rosé wine is also popular in Cyprus. One of the most well-known brands is Shiraz Tsangarides. This wine captures all the flavors and aromas of Cyprus, with a bouquet featuring berry notes and an exquisite scent of roses.

Wine prices in Cyprus

The price of wine depends on its age. For example, a “young” table wine can be priced between €3 and €6 for a 0.75-liter bottle. Wine in plastic bottles is cheaper – starting at €2 per liter, and its quality can be just as good as those in glass bottles. Depending on the aging period, the cost of a good, noble wine is generally as follows:

  • Aged up to 6 years – on average, €9 per 0.75-liter bottle.
  • Aged 6 to 9 years – about €11-19 per 0.75-liter bottle.
  • Aged more than 11 years – from €21 to €50 per 0.75-liter bottle.

If you choose “Commandaria,” be prepared to pay €17 and up per bottle.

Where to buy the best wine in Cyprus?

Good wine is sold in any store, from small supermarkets to large shopping centers. Prices are almost the same everywhere.

The best way to taste Cypriot wines is to attend the annual Cyprus Wine Festival in Limassol. It takes place at the end of August and the beginning of September and showcases products from all Cypriot wineries. There, you can taste wines and learn many interesting facts about them.

Limassol is one of the main wine-producing cities. It is home to the major wine production companies and many small family-owned wineries. In Paphos, Larnaca, and Nicosia, you can also find several producers where you can taste and purchase wines of exquisite flavor and excellent quality.

In the mountainous regions of Cyprus (Vouni Panayia, Pitsilia), there are also vineyards and wineries producing unique wines that you can taste and buy. There are many tour routes to the mountainous areas of Cyprus that include visits to these wineries. Don’t miss the chance to combine a pleasant hike through the island’s attractions with the purchase of wonderful wine!
