When in Cyprus, blend in

When in Cyprus, blend in

13.01.2024

When foreigners decide to settle in Cyprus, they often face the challenge of adapting to their new environment. While it may be easier for young people to become accustomed to “strange customs and behavior,” many foreigners on the island create small, isolated communities rather than “blend in” with the locals.

This isolation is exemplified by British emigrants, especially those who settled in Paphos and “Little England” ( Peyia ). Life in such small communities can be predictable and ultimately boring, as it often becomes a matter of visiting the same places, talking to the same people, and discussing the same topics.

However, there are ways to become a more active member of the local community and enjoy a fulfilling life in Cyprus. For example, even if you have children, give them the opportunity to attend Cypriot primary schools so that they can learn the local language, make friends and participate in various social events.

Of course, this is easier said than done, because local residents don’t help emigrants adapt either. Even when a foreigner tries to speak Greek, the locals will respond in English. So learning the language (not to mention the difficulties of Greek) is very difficult.

There are two types of Greek in Cyprus: “correct” Greek and Cypriot slang, which makes the learning process even more interesting, but causes some difficulties.

For those seeking a sense of belonging to the local community, there are a number of activities available. Joining charities, theater groups, art schools, local sailing and fishing societies, cycling clubs and other community organizations will help you meet new people and learn new things.

Even if you’re on a tight budget, don’t forget that many locals in Cyprus are also retirees with limited funds. It is important to find ways to make your stay on the island more comfortable and enjoyable.

Life in Cyprus can be rich and exciting if you are willing to actively participate in local cultural and social life. Don’t be left out – get involved and enjoy this experience without breaking the bank. Besides the pleasure, you will also be able to feel like you are part of this beautiful island, and not just an outside observer.
