Weather and holidays in Cyprus in December: excursions, mountains, and comfort

December marks the beginning of the winter season in Cyprus, but the island remains sunny and welcoming for travel. Although beach holidays are off-limits, the weather remains mild enough for walks, excursions, and seaside relaxation. Tourists dwindle, hotel and excursion prices drop, and Cyprus presents a tranquil, almost homey atmosphere.

Weather in Cyprus in December

The first month of winter on the island is changeable. Days can be warm and sunny, but rain or storms are possible the very next day. Average daytime temperatures range from 17 to 19°C, sometimes rising to 22 to 23°C. Nights become cool, around 7 to 10°C.

The swimming season officially closes in December: the sea temperature cools to 17–18°C, and strong waves often form near the coast. Winds often reach gale force, making the sea rough and unpredictable. However, on calm days, strolls along the shore are a pleasure, especially when the sun warms and the tourist crowds are quiet.

Rain falls regularly, but for short periods. Sometimes warm, sunny weather suddenly gives way to a drizzle that can last for several hours. Therefore, it’s a good idea to bring an umbrella and a waterproof jacket. However, December temperatures on the island remain comfortable for excursions, mountain trips, and walks.

The main advantage of December is the lack of heat. At this time, you can leisurely explore the sights, stroll through ancient cities, and enjoy views obscured by the summer heat. Prices for tours, accommodation, and food in December are significantly lower than in the high season.

For winter holiday lovers, Cyprus also offers opportunities: snow falls in the Troodos Mountains at this time, and the ski slopes open.

Weather by region

Despite the small size of the island, the climate varies in different parts of Cyprus.

Weather in December in Ayia Napa and Protaras

In the east of the island, temperatures reach 20–22°C in December, with cool nights around 8–10°C. Short showers and strong gusts of wind are common. The sea is cold, around 16°C, so swimming is not recommended. Despite the coolness, the weather remains suitable for walking and exploring the surrounding area.

Weather in Larnaca in December

Weather conditions are similar to those on the east coast: daytime temperatures range from 19 to 21°C, with nighttime highs around 9°C. In December, there are rains and fogs, but the sun often breaks through the clouds. Winds and brief storms are possible along the coast, but the days remain sunny.

Weather in December in Limassol

The southern part of the island enjoys clear skies and temperatures reaching 20°C during the day and 13°C at night. Fog and short rain showers are common. The sea water is slightly warmer than in the east, but storms are not uncommon here.

Weather in Paphos in December

In the southwest of the island, the weather is changeable. Daytime temperatures range from 18 to 20°C, with nighttime temperatures dropping to 12°C. Sunny days alternate with cloudy ones, with occasional winds and precipitation. Thanks to its mild climate, Paphos remains one of the best winter vacation destinations.

Weather in Nicosia in December

The capital is located in the center of the island, so it’s cooler here. Daytime temperatures range from 15 to 18°C, and nighttime temperatures range from 5 to 7°C. Precipitation is moderate, and clear days are perfect for strolling through the old quarters.

In the Troodos Mountains, temperatures are lower than on the coast. There’s already snow on the ground, and the air is cool and crisp.

What to do in Cyprus in December

Winter on the island is the best time for sightseeing. The cooler temperatures allow for relaxed exploration of the island’s landmarks and natural wonders.

The ancient city of Kourion near Limassol, known for its amphitheater and archaeological museum, is worth visiting. On the coast between Limassol and Paphos lies the famous Petra tou Romiou Bay, the birthplace of Aphrodite. Paphos boasts the Villa of Dionysus, the Tombs of the Kings, and an archaeological park with mosaics. Not far from Larnaca is the ancient monastery of Stavrovouni, offering picturesque views of the mountains and sea.

In December, you can witness a unique spectacle: the arrival of flamingos on the salt lake in Larnaca. Skiing begins in Troodos, and mountain trails and villages with wineries are open for hiking.

Before Christmas, the streets are decorated with fir trees, lights, and poinsettias. Stores hold big sales, and cities are decked out with festive displays.

A visit to the capital will allow you to explore architecture from various eras. In the Turkish and Greek quarters of the city, you can see the Whirling Dervishes Museum, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Büyük Han Inn, and ancient mosques.

What clothes should I take with me on a trip?

For a December vacation, it’s worth preparing clothes for different occasions. A light jacket or sweater will suffice during the day on the coast, while heavier clothing will be needed in the mountains. A fall jacket, jeans, a sweater, boots, and an umbrella are ideal. Cotton t-shirts and a windbreaker are suitable for daytime walks. The weather is changeable, so it’s best to dress in layers so you can remove or add layers as needed.
