Updated program for purchasing residential property in remote and mountainous areas

The Government of Cyprus continues to actively develop programs to support residential properties in mountainous, border and socially vulnerable areas. The latest meeting of the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides with representatives of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities and the Minister of Interior Constantinos Ioannou showed that the government maintains its course to improve housing conditions in strategically important areas.

One of the key issues was the discussion of the ” Housing Support Scheme for Mountainous, Border and Problematic Areas” , which is being implemented by the Ministry of the Interior. This project has already helped more than 1,800 beneficiaries since 2019, with the total amount of subsidies provided exceeding 67 million euros .

Updates to the current program

Minister Constantinos Ioannou said that the latest version of the program, which runs until the end of 2025, has made significant changes. In particular, the areas of Afeni , Denia , Mammari and Troulli have been officially included in the list of priorities . These areas are either in a completely closed zone or within a buffer zone, which significantly limits their development without state support.

According to the Minister, by the end of the current phase of the program, there are plans to re-evaluate other areas that could be included in the list if they meet the criteria. This could expand the list of areas , which would create new opportunities for families looking to buy a one-, two- or three -bedroom property in a quieter, less urbanized environment.

Solving local problems

In addition to housing issues, other pressing issues were discussed, including the functioning of checkpoints and infrastructure problems faced by residents of border areas. As Constantinos Ioannou noted, specific solutions have already been outlined for most of them.

The Cyprus government is considering revising the income criteria to expand the range of beneficiaries. The program is planned to be updated annually based on public feedback and the economic situation in the country. This dynamic management model ensures its adaptability and long-term effectiveness.

The Cyprus Mountain and Border Housing Support Programme is an important tool for the development of less populated areas and the improvement of the quality of life of citizens. Its continuous improvement, geographic expansion and financial incentives open up additional opportunities for those who dream of their own home in one of the picturesque areas of the island.
