Transportation in Limassol: all modes of transportation

Transportation in Limassol: all modes of transportation

Limassol is one of the largest cities in Cyprus and an important economic, tourist, and business center for the country. The city’s transportation system was developed to accommodate the high population density, active tourism, and constant vehicular traffic. Limassol has no rail service, so the main modes of transportation are cars, buses, taxis, rental cars, bicycles, and walking. The city stretches along the coast, which directly impacts the structure of transportation routes and travel logistics.

Buses in Limassol

Limassol bus system is the backbone of the city’s public transport and is operated by EMEL ( Limassol Public Transport ). The route network covers central districts, tourist areas, residential areas, and suburbs. The main routes run along the coast, connecting tourist areas, the airport, the historic center, business districts, and beaches.

During the day, bus intervals average 15 to 30 minutes, with more frequent departures on the most popular routes. In the evenings and on Sundays, service frequency is reduced, and some routes close early. There are no regular night routes, which is important to consider when planning late-night trips.

Buses in Limassol are modern, air-conditioned, and equipped with electronic displays. Bus stops are marked with route numbers and route maps, but not all stops have electronic displays.

Main city routes

  • Routes 30 and 31 are the most popular coastal lines, passing through tourist areas, the city centre and the main beaches;
  • Routes 3, 7, 12, 13 – connect residential areas with the center;
  • Route 25 serves the eastern quarters of the city.

There are also routes connecting Limassol with suburban towns and industrial areas.

Tickets and fares

Travel is paid:

  • cash from the driver;
  • by bank card;
  • using transport cards and operator mobile applications.

Single tickets, day and weekly passes, and monthly passes for residents are available. Day and weekly passes are the most convenient for tourists, allowing unlimited rides during the validity period.

Intercity buses

The main intercity bus station is located in the area of Agiou Street Andrea. From here, buses depart to Nicosia, Larnaca, Paphos, Ayia Napa, and Protaras. Intercity buses offer increased comfort, a fixed schedule, and are used for both tourist trips and airport transfers, as well as business travel. Bus stations are located in convenient transportation hubs, making transfers and route planning easier.

Car rental

Renting a car is one of the most popular and practical ways to get around Limassol and the island. Car rental companies located in the city, tourist areas, and airports offer a wide selection of vehicles, from compact city models to SUVs and premium models. Basic requirements include being at least 21 years old, holding an international driver’s license, and having a credit card.

A rental car allows you to freely plan your routes, visiting beaches, mountain villages, wineries, and attractions outside the city, including national parks and archaeological sites. The city’s road infrastructure is well developed, the main highways are in good condition, and signage is available in English.

Taxis and private transportation

Taxis in Limassol operate 24/7 and include both traditional and transfer services. Taxi services offer standard and premium vehicles, which can be ordered by phone, through mobile apps, or hailed on the street.

The fare is calculated based on the tariff and may increase for nighttime travel, luggage, or travel outside the city. Taxis are often chosen by tourists, families with children, and passengers with suitcases. Minivans and private transfers for groups and excursions are also available.

Bicycles and walking routes

Limassol is actively developing its cycling infrastructure. Bike paths along the coastline connect key areas of the city, making travel safe and convenient. Bicycles are used for both leisurely strolls and short errands. Bicycles are available for rent along the promenade and in tourist areas, with hourly and daily rentals available. Tourists can rent bicycles for a few hours or for the entire day, allowing them to combine transportation with active recreation. This mode of transport is especially popular during the warmer months and is ideal for leisurely exploring the city.

Limassol has a well-developed pedestrian infrastructure. The historic center, marina, waterfront, and old quarters are all convenient for strolling. Walking routes allow you to explore the architecture, cafes, shops, and cultural sites without using transport. Many areas of Limassol are convenient for walking, making it possible to combine walking with buses or taxis.

Maritime transport and port

The port of Limassol is the largest in Cyprus and serves cargo, cruise, and passenger ships. Tourists can enjoy boat trips, excursions, and private charters. Maritime transport is used primarily for tourism and does not play a key role in the city’s day-to-day logistics.

Traffic and Parking

Driving in Limassol, as throughout Cyprus, is on the left side of the road. Traffic jams are possible during rush hour, especially in the central areas and along the seafront. Parking is available in municipal and private lots, as well as on-street parking zones with hourly rates. During the tourist season, free spaces in the city center are harder to find, so it’s recommended to plan your parking in advance.

Practical recommendations

When planning your bus trips, consider reduced evening bus frequencies. For trips to outlying areas and sightseeing tours, it’s best to rent a car. Taxis are convenient for overnight trips and trips with luggage, especially for groups. Bicycles and walking routes are ideal for short journeys within the city center and along the waterfront.

Limassol’s transportation options include a variety of options, suited to various purposes and passenger categories. The city offers convenient solutions for both tourists and residents, providing access to beaches, business districts, and attractions without the need for complex logistics.
