Under the construction program of the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK), construction is currently underway to cover the increased housing needs of two university schools, namely the School of Fine and Applied Arts and the School of Communications and Media.
The works concern the construction of a new building on Archbishop Kyprianou Street, which will house the workshops of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the School of Fine and Applied Arts, as well as the reconstruction of an architectural monument at the corner of Marathonos and Argyrou Drousiotis streets; construction of a new building on Marathonos street for the housing needs of the School of Communication and Media.
The projects were developed by a team of architects and engineers from the Property Management Service (PMS) of TEPAK.
Laboratory building of the Faculty of Fine Arts
The laboratory building of the Faculty of Fine Arts consists of three floors and a basement. It will house: four 2D creative workshops (painting), new media workshops, lecture halls and exhibition space.
The first floor of the building, designed so that the space can be reconfigured depending on the needs, is sometimes configured with closed exhibition and training spaces, and sometimes as a single space. This is the most “public” part of the building, as it connects University Square with the courtyard and the existing building through a portico.
The new media workshops are gathered in the basement, 6 workshops in total, which are organized on either side of the atrium according to their soundproofing and blackout needs. On the 1st and 2nd floors there are two-dimensional creative workshops, two on each floor.
The building in question managed to win the Gold Award in the Built Environment/Green Buildings category at the 2020 Cyprus Responsible Business Awards.
The building stands out as a work of special character. It is an environmentally friendly building with minimal mechanical heating, cooling and artificial lighting requirements. The aim is to create a building with almost zero energy consumption, which will be largely covered by photovoltaic systems.
The building was designed on the basis of the principles of bioclimatic architecture with the central design point – spatially and bioclimatically – an atrium, which determines the typology of the space and forms the microclimate inside. In addition, the creation of a green wall is an important element of microclimate change, as vegetation improves air quality by reducing temperature and humidity. Swallow nests will be installed outside.
