The Tassos Papadopoulos Park in Lakatamia was inaugurated on Saturday as part of the Lakatamia Municipality’s decision to proceed with naming parks in honor of the late Presidents of the Republic of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias, Tassos Papadopoulos and Glaukos Clerides.
The opening ceremony of the park was attended by the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Georgos Papanastasiou, Members of Parliament, President of the DIKO Party Nicholas Papadopoulos, the Mayor of Nicosia Konstantinos Giorkatzis, the Mayor of Tseri Stavros Mikhail and members of the family of Tassos Papadopoulos.
Finance Minister Makis Kerainos noted that “the late Tassos Papadopoulos was a special political figure,” adding that “as a student he joined the struggle for the liberation of Cyprus, and upon his return to the country, he, along with other activists and politicians, along with the late Archbishop Makarios, led the struggle of the Cypriot people for liberation from the colonial yoke.”
“Tassos Papadopoulos was a tireless fighter, an ideological warrior, committed to national and democratic ideals, a defender of human rights and took part in every way in the struggle against the Turkish occupation and for the reunification of our homeland with the preservation of the Republic of Cyprus as a sacred heritage,” he added.
Kerainos noted that “the legacy he left to the Cypriot people is enormous,” adding that “an important example is the creation of the Social Security Fund, which was conceived and created by Tassos Papadopoulos as Minister of Labor.”
DIKO President and son of the late Tassos Papadopoulos said he was touched by the initiative of the mayor and Lakatamia Municipal Council to name the park and added that “today’s naming is a sincere recognition of the long and selfless service of Tassos Papadopoulos.”
Mr. Papadopoulos also said that the face of Tassos Papadopoulos reflects “today’s stable level, which ensured the creation of the state of Cyprus, accession to the European Union and the Eurozone” and added that “above all, his face reflects a reliable tomorrow for a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem.” .
The park is intended for children, families, citizens of the municipality of Lakatamia.
Lakatamia Mayor Photula Hatzipapa said that “we are delivering another playground to the children and families of our municipality, built to modern European standards,” and added that the Municipality was launching “the second in a series of such green spaces, following the decisions of the municipal council to begin naming the spaces in honor of the former Presidents of the Republic of Cyprus, Dimitris Christofias, Tassos Papadopoulos and Glaukos Clerides.” He also noted that the alleys are named after Archbishop Makarios III and Spyros Kyprianou, and added that “this is a symbolic act of respect for the values represented by the institution of the President of the Republic.”
