Solar Systems in Cyprus: Key Facts and Prospects

Solar Systems in Cyprus: Key Facts and Prospects

Cyprus’ energy system is being developed rapidly, with a particular focus on renewable energy sources. According to Energy Minister George Papanastasiou, there are around 60,000 photovoltaic systems installed on rooftops across the country.

Today, electricity production from renewable sources in Cyprus has reached 950 MW. Peak demand on the busiest days is around 400 MW, indicating the high productivity of the system. Most of this energy is produced by photovoltaic systems, of which 300-350 MW is generated in private homes.

The minister noted that one of the government’s main goals is to implement programs that will allow each family to install photovoltaic systems to meet their own energy needs. This is a step toward achieving greater energy independence and reducing electricity costs for residents.

One of the key tasks of the Ministry of Energy is the development of energy storage systems. Attention is paid to both centralized energy storage and systems integrated into photovoltaic parks. This will increase the availability of electricity produced by solar panels, which is especially important for ensuring stability in energy supply.

Minister Papanastasiou identified three main directions of energy policy :

  1. Development of renewable energy sources (RES). Inclusion of solar and wind systems in the overall energy balance.
  2. Use of liquefied natural gas (LNG): The Prometheus vessel , currently undergoing inspection and certification in Malaysia, will be a key element in the import of LNG, which will help integrate clean conventional energy.
  3. Electrical connections. Increasing the integration of Cyprus with international electrical networks.

The Minister also noted that a new private power plant is being prepared for launch, which will become an alternative to the Electricity Company of Cyprus (EAC), and the electricity market will soon enter a trial phase of operation for six months.

The combination of renewable energy sources, storage systems and cleaner conventional solutions is shaping a promising future for the energy sector in Cyprus. Through these efforts, the country is strengthening its position on the path to a green and cost-effective energy supply.
