After five years of growth, the value added in the construction sector declined in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic began.
According to the Construction and Development Review, value added (after deducting from the cost of production all costs of production costs, administrative expenses and rent for buildings and equipment) in 2020 at current prices decreased by 3.9% year on year to 1,119.6 Euro. million from EUR 1,165.6 million in 2019, while the value of output in the broader construction sector decreased by 0.2% in 2020 to EUR 4,294.6 million compared to EUR 4,302.2 million in 2019 year.
New construction in 2020 showed a slight decrease of EUR 2,467.5 million . In particular, residential buildings increased by 2.0% compared to 2019, while non-residential buildings decreased by 4.4%, civil engineering objects decreased by 1.6%.
According to the Statistical Service, employment in the construction sector increased in 2020 by 2.3% to 34.8 thousand people from 34.0 thousand people in 2019.
