Reconstruction of the historic center of Strovolos: plan, timeframe and details

Reconstruction of the historic center of Strovolos: plan, timeframe and details

A project to renovate the old city centre has been launched in the Strovolos area, aiming to breathe new life into this part of the city. The main objective of the project is to improve the infrastructure, preserve the historical appearance and create a comfortable urban environment. To implement the work, the Strovolos Municipality announced a tender through the electronic public procurement system, and funding will be provided within the framework of the THALYA 2021-2027 programme with the support of the European Union. The total budget of the project will be 3.99 million euros excluding VAT.

Main stages and features of the project

The project covers the area around the churches of Panagia Chryseleousa and Agios Georgios, as well as part of the road of Archbishop Kyprianou. The main concept of the reconstruction is to unify the road surface, minimize car traffic and develop modern SMART CITY technologies.

Public space along the road axis

Key elements of the project include:

  • Facilitate movement for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as accessibility for people with disabilities.
  • Underground placement of utility lines.
  • Creation of public spaces with thoughtful landscaping, lighting and recreation areas.
  • Installation of urns with waste sorting and waste disposal functions for animals.

Reconstruction of the square and public areas

One of the central parts of the project will be the reconstruction of the area around the church of Panagia Chryseleousa. It is planned to create two public spaces – on the northern and southern sides of the church – with a single concept of coverage and integration of these zones with the adjacent territories.

Design Features:

  1. A single facing of the square and adjacent streets. It will provide aesthetic integrity and convenience for pedestrians.
  2. Recreation areas. Modular seats will be installed, which will be suitable for both individual recreation and for large companies. Also, spacious flower beds with benches for relaxation in the shade will be installed.
  3. Landscaping and lighting. Includes illumination of architectural objects and creation of points with decorative fountains.
  4. Underground utilities. All engineering systems will be hidden underground to preserve the aesthetics of the space.

Public space around St. George’s Church

Design Features:

  1. Unified paving of the territory is a single design of the covering without an obvious division into zones for pedestrians and cars. This helps to reduce the speed of vehicles.
  2. Special lighting – illumination of the territory and the church to emphasize the architectural value.
  3. Infrastructure for waste sorting – placement of waste containers with division into recyclable and non-recyclable.
  4. Underground communications – all engineering systems will be hidden underground, which will improve the visual appearance of the territory.

Parking areas and open market

Design Features:

  1. Flexible use of space – the area can function as a parking lot and a venue for trade fairs.
  2. Innovative solutions include installing shade structures, creating places for pedestrians to rest and providing them with drinking water.
  3. Multifunctionality – parking spaces for cars, including electric cars and bicycles, as well as charging stations.

Pedestrian areas with recreational spaces

Design Features:

  1. Public tables and rest areas – tables and benches for rest will be installed at the beginning of pedestrian streets.
  2. Green areas – planting of plants and installation of structures for climbing plants.
  3. Illumination of public spaces – lighting will attract visitors and highlight the beauty of the area.

Work schedule

  1. All work will be carried out in stages to minimise the impact on area residents.
  2. The contractor is obliged to provide a detailed work schedule within a week after signing the contract.
  3. The reconstruction is expected to take 18 months from the start of construction work.

Application deadlines

Applications for participation in the competition can be submitted until midday on February 28. The results of the competition will be announced three months after the application deadline, and the signing of the contract is planned within four months from this date.
