The center of Larnaca is undergoing a radical transformation with the reconstruction of the historic Acropolis and Alka squares, which will be a continuation of the projects planned for the commercial center of the city.
The Municipality of Larnaca signed from April 2021 a contract to prepare the study for the project with AF Modinos and SA Vrahimis Architects and Engineers. Preliminary redevelopment plans for the two “F” areas have recently been submitted to the municipal council. Completion of construction plans will take place in May 2023, after which a tender will be announced to start work.
The aim of the project is the aesthetic, functional and qualitative renewal of the territory and the provision of unhindered and safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles. Essentially, this project will complete the modernization, beautification and traffic management of the City Center Urban Sustainable Mobility Plan.
Sidewalks will be expanded in the district, unified city lighting with mast lamps will be installed, benches and flower beds will be installed, and new parking spaces will be created, even for electric vehicles. In addition, the drainage system will be modernized, engineering networks will be buried, and a water element will be installed with the placement of modern urban equipment, including on the site that delimits the beginning of Ermou Street and the end of Cleanti Kalogera Street.
It is also planned to create a new state-of-the-art kiosk in the space, which will comply with the relevant take-away regulations in order to ensure the legal operation of the “Peroutsiou” kebab shop in Alki Square. The building was built by the Larnaca Municipality in the 1960s on land owned by the Larnaca School Board. The owner of the property, as the mayor of Larnaca recently said in response to a question from MP Christos Orphanidis, pays the municipality monthly rent, related taxes and provides the necessary licenses to operate it.
It is noted that the project has been included in the list of mature projects to be approved for co-financing from European Union funds during the new program period 2021-2027.
The two squares, together with projects planned in the commercial center of Larnaca, are vying to become new benchmarks for the city.
