After more than a decade of efforts, we have succeeded in creating a new, modern and improved legal framework for local government, Interior Minister Nikos Nouris said at an information day dedicated to the implementation of a new legal framework for local government. A reform which he called one of the most important reforms since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus.
Saying that another more promising day has arrived for local administration in Cyprus, Nouris thanked the President and the members of the House of Representatives Committee on Home Affairs, the Presidents and members of the Unions of Municipalities and Communities of Cyprus, and his team at the Ministry for their excellent cooperation in achieving this goal.
“After more than a decade of effort, deliberation and consultation, we have all succeeded in creating a new, modern and improved legislative framework that the House of Representatives voted on last March,” he continued.
Nouris said in his speech that there is no doubt that the local government reform is one of the most important reforms since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, adding that it was a reform that the government is consistently implementing, considering it to be its pinnacle . priority .
He said that much needs to be done in the transition period until May 2024, noting that the ministry will strictly adhere to the time frame in order to be ready for a smooth transition to the new institutional structure.
“The first step has been taken. The government of President Anastasiades has fulfilled its obligations,” he concluded.
