A protest against high rents in Limassol will take place on Saturday, April 27, starting at 17:00 in the square in front of the district administration building on Anexartisias Street.
The event is organized by the Housing Initiative, a citizen’s group dedicated to issues related to residential property in Cyprus.
In its statement, the Housing Initiative noted how expensive life has become on the island, as wages remain stagnant while rents and consumer prices continue to rise.
“We cannot pin our hopes on the famous complex and luxury high-rise buildings,” the statement said. “We also can’t expect landlords who rent us crumbling €800 studios to suddenly take care of us and lower our rent. Landlords only look out for their own interests.”
Although residential rents are rising throughout Cyprus, Limassol has been particularly affected by the recent surge in rents.
A similar protest took place in Limassol in June 2018. It was attended by hundreds of people, mostly young people, with banners and slogans against rents for houses and apartments, which have risen significantly over the past two years.
