The need of the local community for communication in quality open spaces was urgent, judging by the results of a study on the use of space by residents of the districts.
The Limassol Municipality was awarded and received the title of “Cyprus Green City” after receiving the highest rating from the Scientific Evaluation Committee of two projects, one of which is the “Redevelopment of 4 areas in Limassol” in the category “Sustainable Built Environment”.
The project consists of squares:
- Michalis Kakoyannis (formerly Syntagma).
- Renaissance (Agios Antonios).
- Philellinon (SINE Hair).
- Titi Koudunari Square (Tsiflikoudia).
The cost of the project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union for the program period 2014-2020, amounted to 2.4 million euros.
The ecological modernization of the districts has a positive impact on the inhabitants of Limassol and, at the same time, increases their commercialization and competitiveness. Four squares have walkways, facilities for the disabled, landscaping, lighting and other equipment. As before, in all squares, except for Michalis Kakoyanni Square, there are parking spaces, there are exercise machines for adults and children.
On the Filellino Square in Agios Ioannis, the external facades of the buildings have been renovated, and places for events have been created in all squares. Bioclimatic elements such as intensive landscaping and plumbing have been incorporated into the ‘Regeneration of 4 squares in Limassol’ project, as well as highly aesthetic urban furniture has been added. Four squares are social meeting places for residents, especially young people, where social relations and activities develop. In addition, the elderly, the disabled and the community in general are provided with the opportunity to exercise regularly and free of charge in an easily accessible and enjoyable environment.
Decoration squares have significantly improved the image and attractiveness of the territories, the built environment and the quality of life of residents. Sometimes marginalized areas of the city, such as Tsiflikoudia, Agios Antonios and Agios Ioannis, attract residents from other areas daily to take to the streets with their families. Laughter and games now take center stage in the squares where children’s parties and wonderful moments in our neighborhood take place.
