The appearance of Heroes’ Square will change in 2024, as reconstruction work is expected to begin in mid-July.
The project, with a total budget of 3.4 million euros +VAT, is implemented within the framework of the THALEIA Political Cohesion Program 2021-2027 with co-financing from the European Union. Architectural study of the project was carried out by AA&U- Sokratis Stratis and studio INB2in-Maria Hatzisotiriou . The supervision of the project was taken over by INB2in studio Maria Hatzisotiriou .
The contract for the construction plans was signed on behalf of the Limassol Municipality by Mayor Nikos Nikolaidis and on behalf of Socrates Architects Stratis , AA&U and Christos companies Pasadakis .
The project provides the infrastructure for the redevelopment of the square and proposes organizational structures for the city’s common use to encourage and enable multi-collectivity of public space. It organizes the space of the square based on a smart floor, which functions as a network of infrastructures for social and environmental processes. With a sustainable rainwater management system, the floor of the area will be able to collect some of the runoff, retain the rest, filter it and store it in a reservoir under the floor.
The smart floor configuration scheme allows the organization of four oases around the existing pavilions. Scientists propose such structures as the “Little Rialto”, “Greenhouse of Ideas for Everyone”, “Game House”, “Greenhouse for Plants”, as well as “Hanging Gardens”. Ample dining space is created in front of the cafes and restaurants by relocating the existing roadway and converting two of the four streets into pedestrian streets. Thus, the main part of the area remains accessible to the city public.
