The impressively restored square and buildings in front of the Church of Agios Georgios were officially opened in the Peyia district. The grand opening ceremony took place on Thursday and was attended by Archbishop George of Cyprus, who consecrated the renovated space. Representatives of the government, municipality, and public organizations, as well as residents of the district, participated in the event. Among them were Paphos District Governor Efrosini Georgiou, district councilors, Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou, and former minister Nikos Kossii.
The reconstruction of the square and its surrounding buildings was the result of close collaboration between the Holy Metropolis of Paphos and the Spiritual Committee of the Church of St. George in Peyia. The project’s primary objectives were to preserve the historical and religious character of the area, enhance its functionality, and improve its aesthetic appeal.
Archbishop George emphasized the historical significance of the area, recalling that in ancient times, ships transporting grain to Constantinople moored here. He noted that Romans from Constantinople and Greeks lived and preached in this area, hence the diocese’s name, “Diocese of the Romans.”
In his speech, Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou noted that the municipality actively promotes projects aimed at improving religious and culturally significant sites. He emphasized the importance of harmoniously combining neighborhood development with environmental protection, which directly impacts the quality of life for both residents and visitors to the area.
The renovated square and adjacent buildings belong to the Holy Metropolis of Paphos and the Church of St. George in Peyia, making it an important spiritual and cultural center of the area. Over the years, church committees under the leadership of the Paphos Metropolis have been preserving the area, carrying out repairs, strengthening the walls, and improving the parking infrastructure.
The completed reconstruction is the culmination of years of work to revive this historically significant site and adapt it to the needs of modern residents. Special thanks were extended to Archbishop George and the Holy Metropolis of Paphos for their leadership and support of the project.
The project received full financial support from Korantina Homes Group, led by founder and CEO George Ioannou. The initiative continues a series of projects aimed at restoring religious and cultural sites throughout Peyia, demonstrating the business community’s commitment to preserving the area’s historical heritage.
