How do strikes in the construction industry affect the economy of Cyprus?

Continuation of strikes in the ready-mix concrete sector could lead to market destabilization and create serious problems both for the construction industry itself and for the economy as a whole.

The Federation of Cyprus Contractors (OSEC ) expressed its readiness to actively participate in the dialogue and facilitate the achievement of an agreement between the parties to the conflict. The President of OSEC , Stelios Gabriel, stressed the importance of a serious and responsible approach by all participants in the negotiations.

He noted that although the conflict concerns a separate collective agreement, its consequences directly affect the construction industry, which depends on a stable supply of concrete. O S EOC calls on the parties to find a solution to avoid a chain reaction that could harm other sectors of the economy.

The President of the O S EOC pointed out that although short-term interruptions in concrete supplies do not pose a critical threat, continued strikes could paralyse construction sites. The O S EOC is ready to offer support to both sides to reach a mutually acceptable solution.

In parallel, the Pancypriot Concrete Producers Association expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the unions, which declared an indefinite strike until negotiations with the Ministry of Labour are completed. In response, the Association imposed a 48-hour lockout to assess the situation and take further action.

President of the Association, Kostas Kyfreotis stressed that the readiness to return to dialogue remains a priority. If the strike is ended in the near future, the lockout will also be lifted.

Economic consequences of the conflict

Long-term disruptions in concrete supplies could affect not only the construction industry but also related sectors, including cement plants, which will be forced to reduce production. Given the importance of the construction industry for the Cypriot economy, finding a solution is a top priority.

All parties to the conflict acknowledge the need for a rapid resolution of the situation. O S EOC continues to stress that problems that have arisen in one sector should not develop into a crisis affecting the entire economy. The organization calls on participants to sit down at the negotiating table to find a mutually beneficial solution and restore stability to the sector.
