On Sunday 12 May 2024 the opening of the park took place on Rue Gauguin in Zakaki . This event attracted the attention of hundreds of residents of the area and beyond. The total cost of the park is estimated at 1,903,000 euros. In the presence of officials and a large crowd, the red ribbon was cut by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou. The opening of the park was preceded by an artistic program by the Youth Jazz Orchestra of the Limassol Municipality Philharmonic Orchestra and the Papadakios Municipal Conservatory Choir, as well as a Dedication ceremony performed by His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasius of Limassol .
The Mayor of Limassol, Nikos Nicolaides, noted in his welcome that “the park on Gauguin Street is part of the Municipal Council’s policy of creating new green spaces and improving existing parks and squares, as well as our leading policy of improving the neighborhoods of our municipality.”
He emphasized that “the park on Gauguin Street is a truly impressive park, which has already won the most flattering reviews from authoritative foreign magazines. The Limassol Municipality has already received the Cyprus Green City Award from the Cyprus Center for Environmental Research and Education (KYKPEE) for this park.
“Thanks to the project we are launching today, the modernization of areas of our city continues,” he added.
The park on Gauguin Street is the second largest park in the city after the Square. Its total area is 10,000 square meters. This is the sixth object in a series of squares and parks built in the city in recent years. It was designed by an experienced team of architects – Stelios Lakkotrypis , Maria Lianou and Alexandros Christofini .
The project focused on the restoration of infrastructure, as well as the enrichment and renewal of greenery, creating a sustainable and functional public space. As part of its renovation, a circular multi-tiered plaza (which forms a central space for small gatherings and events), an area for adult sports, a children’s playground, space for a small cafe, a public meeting area, a walkway, an outdoor theater for screenings and performances, an observatory, table tennis court, outdoor seating area, disabled facilities and a rainwater harvesting system, and an irrigation system has been installed.
