The Cyprus Department of Environmental Protection has approved the expansion of the Linear Park along the Pedios River in Nicosia, a project which includes the creation of new pedestrian paths and cycling routes. It will pass through the area of St. Andrew and continue south, affecting the area within the UN zone.
The project has a preliminary cost estimate of 895,503 euros and will begin once all necessary permits have been obtained. Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months.
Project objectives
The main objective of the project is to expand the existing linear park along the Pedios River . It is planned to create safe paths for pedestrians and cyclists, improve the infrastructure and enhance the ecological value of the area. The total length of the new park will be 5.6 kilometers, of which the first section of 380 meters will run along Kiniras Street , the second – 435 meters – will cross the “dead zone” to Nikos Kazantzakis Street , and the third section (4.795 kilometers) will be located further north and will include the completion of the project along the western bank of the river.
The project aims to create an ecologically safe environment with improved infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, it provides flood protection in dangerous areas and the preservation of rare species of flora and fauna living along the river.
Project details
The project will include two parallel paths — one for cyclists up to 2 meters wide, and one for pedestrians up to 1.5 meters wide. These paths will be located along the river banks, their routes will follow the natural features of the landscape. In places with limited space, the width of the paths can be reduced to 1 meter. Where possible , it is planned to install lighting based on energy-saving LED technologies. The lamps will be placed on poles 3-5 meters high.
Additionally, where the paths cross the river bed, a wooden bridge or raised walkway will be built to protect against erosion. Concrete curbs will be installed at the edges of the paths to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
It is important to note that all work will be carried out exclusively within the registered boundaries of the river and will not affect private property. Along the site in the “dead zone” a raised pedestrian path will be built at a height of 3-5 meters, which will allow for the preservation of free space for UNFICYP patrols. A fence will also be installed along this area.
Environmental report
During the review of the project, the Environmental Service took into account environmental protection requirements and consulted with the Water Resources Authority and carried out a field inspection. As a result, it was decided that the project does not require a full environmental impact assessment, since the potential negative effects would be minimal and manageable if the envisaged measures were followed. The following criteria were considered:
- Project characteristics: The main focus is on the creation of a green area and infrastructure for public use along the Pedios River , including bicycle routes and pedestrian paths.
- Project Location: The park and paths will be located in a protected area adjacent to the Pedios River , in the south within the UN zone. This area includes both residential and commercial developments, highlighting the importance of the project for improving the urban environment.
- Potential environmental impacts: The Environmental Service has concluded that the project will not have a significant negative impact on the environment, provided that all proposed mitigation measures are implemented. The plan takes into account potential risks and the proposed solutions are aimed at minimizing them.
The project to expand the linear park along the Pedios River is of great importance for improving the quality of the urban environment of Nicosia and its successful implementation will benefit both local residents and visitors, creating conditions for active outdoor recreation and maintaining the ecological balance of the region.
