According to data published by Eurostat, the EU statistical office, in 2020, about 70% of the EU population lived in owner-occupied housing, while the remaining 30% lived in rented housing.
The percentages in Cyprus are in line with the EU averages as 68.6% of the population lived in owner-occupied dwellings (69.7% in the EU) and 31.4% lived as tenants in rental dwellings.
The highest proportions of ownership were observed in Romania, where 96% of the population lived in owner-occupied dwellings, followed by Slovakia (92%), Hungary and Croatia (91% each).
In all member states except Germany, ownership is the most common. In the case of Germany, half of the population owns their own home and the other half lives in a rented house (50.4% and 49.6%, respectively).
The proportion of homeowners was also lowest in Austria (55.3%) and Denmark (59.3%).
In terms of the largest share of the population living in rented homes in 2020, Cyprus was ranked 7th out of 26 Member States (data not available for Italy).
