Employment in Cyprus increased by 1.9% in the second quarter of 2022

According to a report published on Wednesday by the Statistical Office of Cyprus (Cystat), employment in Cyprus increased by 1.9% in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2021, while actual working hours increased by 5.2%.

According to a preliminary employment estimate, the total number of employed in the second quarter of 2022 is estimated at 458,706 people, of which 408,922 employees and 49,786 self-employed. The most significant percentage growth was observed in the sectors of accommodation and catering, information and communication, property management, wholesale and retail trade, and auto and motorcycle repair. In addition, the actual working hours in the second quarter of 2022 are estimated at 207,154 hours, up 5.2% from the corresponding quarter of 2021.

According to a report published this week by the Statistical Office of Cyprus (Cystat), in the first half of 2022 there was a decrease in both the area and the cost of new building permits issued in the first half of 2022. Between January and June 2022, a total of 3,898 building permits were issued compared to 3,990 in the corresponding period of the previous year, representing a decrease of 2.3%.

Residential building permits during this time decreased by 6.2%, while road and civil engineering permits increased by 34.8% and 24.9%, respectively. At the same time, the total cost of these permits decreased by 9.1%, while the cost of residential buildings decreased by 11.6%, while the cost of road and civil engineering objects increased by 25.6% and 35.1%, respectively.

The total area also decreased by 12.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2021, as the area of residential buildings decreased by 10.9%, and non-residential – by 21.4%.

The number of residential units decreased by 5%. Single-family homes shrank 9.6%, semi-detached homes 6%, residential multi-family homes 3%, and residential and commercial multi-family homes rose 7.2%.

The number of building permits issued by the city and district administrations in June 2022 was 626.

The total value of these permits reached 220.1 million euros, and the total area reached 202,100 square meters. These permits provide for the construction of 1,146 housing units.

Building permits are a leading indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

The Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) ended Wednesday, September 7th with a profit.

The overall Cypriot stock market index stood at 73.05 points at 12:35 pm during the day, reflecting an increase of 0.68% from the previous trading day.

The FTSE/CySE 20 Index stood at 43.80, up 0.67%.

The total transaction value was 74,385 euros.

As for the sub-indices, the main index rose by 1.08%, while the alternative and investment companies indices decreased by 0.81% and 0.49%, respectively. The hotel index remained stable.

Bank of Cyprus (+4.03%), Salamis Tours (-1.5%), Petrolina Holdings (-0.92%), Logicom (no change) and Louis Plc (no change) attracted the highest investment interest.
