Finance Minister Konstantinos Petrides on Wednesday said the government’s long-term economic strategy, Vision 2035, is action-based and designed to address the challenges Cyprus will face in the coming years.
Petrides’ comments came after the Economics and Competitiveness Council presented a national sustainability strategy to President Nicos Anastasiades. “Green development policies and the abandonment of fossil fuels play an important and paramount role in this strategy,” said the finance minister.
The event was presented by Council President Takis Cleridis, while Andreas Assiotis, Vice President of the Council and President of the Steering Committee of this project, presented the strategy.
Clerides underlined that Vision 2035 sets the path for Cyprus to develop over the next 15 years with the aim of moving towards a new, modern economic model. He said that great importance is attached to the green and digital transition, as well as the modernization and competitiveness of the economy.
The strategy has also been designed to be linked to the Recovery and Resilience Plan, which is already underway.
For its part, Assiotis said that the new strategy includes more than 240 horizontal and sectoral practical proposals. According to him, their main goal is to contribute to the sustainable development of the country and ensure the well-being of all citizens. He added that these activities should be encouraged and carried out by the competent ministries and deputy ministries, as well as other competent authorities, emphasizing the importance of ownership of the strategy by the authorities implementing it.
In addition, Assiotis noted that the strategy also includes key performance indicators (KPIs) to track implementation progress. In addition, it also includes an integrated control mechanism for its implementation.
The Council stated that the strategy belongs to the whole of society and for this reason Vision 2035 was shaped through intensive dialogue with a wide range of public and private sector bodies.
However, it was emphasized that his vision must be translated into action, and achieving this requires political consensus and the commitment of all participants, including parties, civil service, social partners and business.
“A lot of painstaking work has been done in recent years so that today we can present to the Cabinet of Ministers a concrete, long-term strategy that is not based on theories or wishful thinking that we have seen in previous instances,” Finance Minister Petrides said. this strategy, we will also face all future challenges,” he added.
