The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Public Works of Cyprus has announced the launch of a major infrastructure project in Limassol. The second phase of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) will see the modernization of key transport axes, promoting public transport, cycling infrastructure and road safety.
The total budget of the project is €2,855,000 (excluding VAT). Funding has been provided by the European Union under the “Green Urban Mobility Plan”. The project aims to improve the accessibility of urban transport and the quality of life in urban areas.
The implementation of the project will have a positive impact on urban traffic:
- The popularity of public transport will increase due to improved infrastructure.
- The load on roads will decrease.
- Safe conditions for pedestrians and cyclists will be created, which will contribute to the growth of environmental awareness.
Limassol is strengthening its position as an example of a city with a modern transport system oriented towards the needs of its residents and environmental development.
Main stages of the project
The project is being implemented under the leadership of Cyfield Construction Limited , includes:
- Creating bus lanes and stops. The new lanes will speed up public transport, reducing waiting times and improving accessibility.
- Development of bicycle infrastructure. Bicycle paths, parking lots and additional facilities for the convenience of cyclists will be built.
- Improvement of pedestrian areas. It is planned to build new sidewalks and modernize existing ones, which will increase the convenience of walking.
- Road safety. Pelican and Zebra controlled crossings have been introduced , and traffic lights have been modernized.
Work will begin in May 2025 and be completed within 9 months.
