Cyprus in October is the velvet season and the ideal time for a holiday

Cyprus remains an attractive holiday destination even in mid-autumn. Despite the end of the high season, the island maintains sunny, mild weather and a welcoming atmosphere. October is considered a “velvet” time for a vacation, when the heat subsides, the sea remains warm, and the tourist infrastructure remains fully operational. For parents with children and those seeking a more relaxed trip, this is the ideal month: fewer crowds, moderate prices, and a comfortable climate.

Weather in Cyprus in October

October on the island is a continuation of the velvet season. Days are mostly clear, precipitation is rare, and temperatures are comfortable for walking and swimming. Average daytime temperatures range from 22 to 24°C, with the southern and eastern regions reaching 27–28°C. The sea remains very warm—24–26°C at the beginning of the month and around 24°C by the end.

The climate becomes drier, with humidity dropping to 50%, making it easy to breathe even in the sun. Rain is rare, and the wind picks up only in the evening. During this time, temperatures can drop to 16–18°C, so a light jacket is useful for evening walks. In the second half of the month, it gradually cools down, especially in the mornings and evenings. Despite the mild climate, the sun remains strong, so sunglasses and sunscreen are essential companions for vacationers.

Weather by region

The main resorts of Cyprus – Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Protaras, Limassol and Paphos – welcome October with a calm and warm climate.

Weather in October in Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Protaras

Summer temperatures persist in the east and southeast of the island. Daytime temperatures reach 26–27°C, while nighttime temperatures reach around 18–19°C. Precipitation is virtually nonexistent, with no more than 2–3 rainy days per month. The swimming season continues until the end of the month, and the sea remains warm and clear.

Weather in October in Limassol and Paphos

In the western regions, temperatures are slightly cooler: around 25–26°C during the day and 17–18°C in the evening. Rain is rare, and even on cloudy days, the sun quickly returns. In Paphos, the water near the coast remains at 24–25°C, making it suitable for swimming until mid-autumn.

Weather in October in Nicosia

In the capital, daytime temperatures reach 27°C, dropping to 16–18°C at night. The absence of coastal winds means the air is drier, making the daytime warmth more noticeable.

Travelers who prefer active excursions and cultural recreation choose October—the mild sun and fair weather make trips around the island especially enjoyable.

Things to do in October

Autumn in Cyprus is not only a time for sightseeing, but also a busy calendar of holidays and festivals.

Independence Day (October 1)

The country’s main public holiday, Nicosia hosts military parades, concerts, public celebrations, and evening fireworks displays. The celebrations are accompanied by traditional songs, dances, and festive processions.

Wine festivals

October is considered winemakers’ month: many villages host vibrant festivals celebrating the grape harvest. Residents decorate their homes, wear traditional costumes, and treat guests to local wines and snacks. Rural festivals are especially popular in the Limassol area and the Troodos mountain region.

Medieval Festival in Ayia Napa

One of the most atmospheric events of autumn. The city’s historic center, the area around the ancient monastery, is transformed into a venue for theatrical performances, costumed parades, and craft fairs. Visitors can watch reenactments of knightly battles, sample dishes prepared using ancient recipes, and participate in master classes on medieval crafts.

Ayia Napa is also known for its diverse nightlife. The nightlife at this youth resort decreases only slightly at this time of year. Numerous cafes, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs remain open.

Festival “Kipria”

The festival has been running since September and spans several cities: Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, and Nicosia. The program includes theater productions, concerts, art exhibitions, and performances.

Besides cultural events, October is a great time to stroll the ancient streets of Nicosia, explore the archaeological sites of Paphos, and take excursions to the Troodos Mountains. Autumn is especially beautiful: the green hills change colors, and the markets are filled with an abundance of fruit—grapes, pomegranates, peaches, mangoes, and persimmons.

For those seeking a more relaxing holiday, Paphos or Protaras are ideal. Nightlife enthusiasts should head to Ayia Napa, where the clubs and bars remain open until the end of October. For a culinary experience, the villages of Troodos are ideal, where you can sample local wine, halloumi cheese, and fresh olives.
