According to data published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, in 2021 European Union cities had the highest cost of housing.
At the EU level, in 2021, 10.4% of the EU population living in cities suffered from excessive housing costs, while the corresponding figure in rural areas was 6.2%.
The housing overburden rate is the proportion of the population living in households whose total housing costs (after housing allowances) exceed 40% of total disposable income (after housing allowances).
The highest urban housing cost burden among Member States was recorded in 2021 in Greece (32.4%), followed by Denmark (21.9%) and the Netherlands (15.3%). The lowest rates for urban areas were recorded in Lithuania (1.6%), Malta (2.9%) and Hungary (3.1%). In rural areas, the percentage was highest in Greece (22.0%), followed by Bulgaria (13.3%) and Romania (10.8%). The lowest rates for rural areas were recorded in Cyprus (1.3%), followed by Ireland (1.6%) and Hungary (2.2%).
