The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEBE) has completed the modernization of its building, transforming it into an environmentally friendly or “green” building. The renovation and modernization focused on the green and digital transformation of the building, aimed at enhancing the comfort and well-being of its users. As noted by Anna Foka, an environmental engineer and member of KEBE’s European Programs Department, this project was carried out in accordance with international standards and included numerous measures aimed at improving energy efficiency, minimizing environmental impact, and enhancing indoor environmental quality.
The initial renovation of the building was aimed at improving working conditions for 35 employees and enhancing KEBE’s prestige, which earned an architectural award at the end of 2023.
As part of the environmental transformation, solar panels with a capacity of 53 kW were installed on the roof and south side of the building, providing energy and creating shade during the summer months, thereby reducing the need for cooling. The heating and cooling systems were replaced with more efficient ones, and “smart” meters were installed to monitor energy consumption. A Building Management System (BMS) was implemented, air quality monitoring systems were installed, and digital upgrades were made to reduce the carbon footprint and energy consumption. Additionally, three private electric vehicle charging stations were installed, and a vertical garden was added to the north side of the building, which not only improves aesthetics but also contributes to better microclimate and air quality by absorbing 0.68 kg of CO2 per square meter annually.
This project was part of the GoGreen – Computing Power Goes Green initiative, funded by the Interreg Balkan-Med European Union program, and was completed in December 2023. The total cost of this modernization, including the necessary research, amounted to €500,000.
The KEBE building modernization process aimed to achieve a dual transition—combining green and digital technologies, contributing to the creation of eco-friendly, efficient, and flexible workspaces. This reflects KEBE’s commitment to adopting development practices that meet European and international standards.
The next step for KEBE will be to obtain an environmental certificate for the building, which will underscore their commitment to creating eco-friendly working conditions that enhance productivity and employee well-being. Despite the challenges associated with implementing new technologies and costs, KEBE sees this project as an opportunity to reduce energy consumption, increase competitiveness, and lower operational costs. The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also ready to support businesses in this direction.
“This is not just a technical achievement, but an ethical commitment to a green future, as one of our key goals is the well-being of employees in a beautiful and comfortable environment that enhances productivity, mental health, and creativity.”
KEBE emphasizes that such projects not only contribute to reducing the environmental footprint but also help create a comfortable, harmonious, and productive environment for employees, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
