The Minister of Transport, Communications and Public Works, Alexis Vafeadis, inspected the construction site where the second phase of the stabilization project for a section of the old Paphos-Limassol road (B6) is being completed. The Director of the Department of Public Works, Lefteris Eleftheriou, also took part in the visit.
The project involves a set of technical measures aimed at strengthening a geotechnically vulnerable section of the road in the popular tourist area of Petra tou Romiou. The works are being carried out by CYBARCO Contracting Limited , and the total cost of the project was €4,607,300 excluding VAT .
What does the project include?
The stabilization of the old road section is carried out by constructing two rows of pile structures on both sides of the road. The following technical solutions are also envisaged:
- installation of connecting beams and transverse foundation beams;
- reclamation of the subsoil layer;
- construction of a retaining wall;
- drainage works;
- asphalt paving;
- installation of road signs and traffic safety improvement means.
Stages of implementation
The project is being implemented in two stages:
- Phase And the 250-meter-long line was completed in January 2023.
- Phase The 300-meter long pipeline began in May 2024 and is 90% complete. Full completion of the work is expected by the end of July 2025 .
Minor delays were caused by strikes and necessary design changes.
During the visit, Minister Vafeadis stressed that the importance of the project lies not only in the engineering component, but also in ensuring the safety of residents and tourists in an area with high traffic and a complex geological structure. According to him, thanks to the efforts of the Department of Public Works, Cyprus is strengthening its road network and improving the daily functionality and accessibility of rural areas.
