Countries with visa-free entry for Cyprus passport holders

Citizens of the Republic of Cyprus possess one of the world’s most “powerful” passports, allowing them to visit many countries without a visa or with minimal formalities, such as a visa on arrival or electronic authorization. In 2024, holders of Cypriot passports can travel freely to 112 countries without the need to obtain a visa in advance, making their passport extremely convenient for global travel.

Europe

Cypriot citizens can travel to all European Union countries, including popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, the Netherlands, Belgium, and others. Most European countries offer visa-free stays of up to 90 days, allowing travelers to enjoy their holidays or handle business matters. Besides EU countries, Cypriots can enter non-Schengen countries without a visa, such as the United Kingdom (up to 180 days), Ireland, and Iceland. Visa-free entry is also possible to Switzerland, Norway, and even small states like Andorra and San Marino.

Asia

The Asian region also offers numerous visa-free destinations for Cypriot citizens. They can visit countries such as Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines without needing a visa. Additionally, visa-free regimes are in place in Israel and several Middle Eastern countries, such as the UAE, Jordan, and Qatar. For travel to Turkey, no visa is required in advance — it can be obtained upon arrival at the airport. In some regional countries, like Indonesia and Thailand, Cypriots can get a visa on arrival, simplifying the entry process.

America

Cypriot citizens can travel freely across many countries in Latin America. Visa-free entry is available to countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Panama, and Peru. In the Caribbean, Cypriots can visit the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Barbados, and Saint Kitts and Nevis without a visa. In North America, Cypriots can use the visa waiver program to enter the United States, with prior ESTA authorization, and they need an electronic travel authorization (eTA) for Canada.

Africa

The African continent also offers Cypriot citizens numerous travel opportunities. Visa-free entry is available to South Africa, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Botswana. In several African countries, Cypriots can obtain a visa upon arrival, including Egypt, Tanzania, and Kenya. However, for travel to some other African nations, such as Algeria, Libya, and Sudan, a visa must be obtained in advance.

Visa on Arrival

In 2024, Cypriot citizens can obtain a visa on arrival in more than 30 countries, including popular tourist destinations such as Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Egypt, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Visas on arrival are issued at the border, in airports, or other entry points. This process typically doesn’t take much time and requires a minimal set of documents, such as a passport, return ticket, and hotel reservation confirmation. Visa fees are paid on-site.

Electronic Visas (eVisa)

Electronic visas offer another convenient way for Cypriot citizens to visit various countries. This process involves obtaining a visa online before traveling, significantly saving time and simplifying preparation. For example, an eVisa is required to visit countries such as India, Australia, Vietnam, Kenya, and Azerbaijan. Processing an electronic visa usually takes a few hours to a few days, with costs varying depending on the country. For instance, an eVisa for India costs around $25, while for Australia, it’s about $20.

Special Cases

Some countries have special requirements for Cypriot citizens. For example, traditional visas are needed for travel to Russia and China, which must be obtained at the consulates of these countries. Meanwhile, in countries with more complex political situations, such as Iran, visas can only be obtained upon arrival at certain international airports.

Thus, citizens of the Republic of Cyprus can travel visa-free to many countries around the world, and in several others, they can take advantage of simplified processes such as visas on arrival or electronic visas. This makes the Cypriot passport one of the most convenient for international travel. While some countries still require obtaining a visa in advance, the number of such destinations is decreasing, and the visa application process has been significantly simplified for Cypriot citizens.
