The Spyros Kyprianou Indoor Stadium in Limassol is ready to be put into operation after a major renovation and modernization. The total cost of the sports complex renovation was 14.5 million euros. This facility will be one of the key venues for FIBA Eurobasket 2025, which will be held in late August – early September.
The modernization work began in August last year and is being completed in the coming days. The reconstruction included updating the lighting, power supply, air conditioning and ventilation systems, as well as the introduction of modern communication technologies and security systems.
The new stadium concept provides for a comprehensive replacement of the stands, including the installation of previously provided but not assembled seats, as well as the addition of mobile stands to increase capacity and comfortable seating of spectators. An important aspect was the additional exits to ensure fire safety and access for people with disabilities.
In addition, the team locker rooms were completely renovated, and administrative offices and event areas were partially refurbished. New flooring and equipment such as baskets, scoreboards and time boards, video screens were installed, carpets were renewed and external landscaping was carried out where necessary, parking and park-and-ride areas were built, and many other smaller works were carried out in various parts of the stadium. A CCTV system was installed, which did not exist before and is mandatory under the new legislation.
The President of the Cyprus Basketball Federation, Andreas Mouzouridis, noted that the reconstruction went beyond simple preparation for the tournament – it is an investment in the national sports infrastructure and an important step for the promotion of Cypriot sports at the international level.
The challenges faced by the builders and contractors included bureaucracy, tight deadlines and technical challenges. However, thanks to the coordinated work of all participants, the project was completed efficiently and on time.
The Spyros Kyprianou Stadium now meets modern requirements, providing a high level of comfort for athletes and spectators, as well as opportunities for hosting major sporting and cultural events.
Stadium renovation as a contribution to the development of sports and the economy of Cyprus
The reconstruction is financed by the state budget by decision of the Cabinet of Ministers. President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that there are already requests from foreign sports teams to rent the facility for training and competitions, which opens up new opportunities for the development of sports tourism and attracting investment.
With all the upgrades, the Spyros Kyprianou Stadium becomes a key element of the national sports system, which will be able to host international events of the highest level. This, in turn, will stimulate economic activity in the region, creating new jobs and improving the image of Cyprus as a country that supports sports and modern technology.
