Support from EU cohesion funds will provide Cyprus with a new impetus for further sustainable growth, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reform Elisa Ferreira said on Thursday.
Ferreira is visiting Cyprus to approve the Cohesion Policy Partnership Agreement as well as the Operational Program and the Just Transition Plan for Cyprus. The EU funds allocated to Cyprus for the period 2021-2027 amount to about 1 billion euros, which are accompanied by national funds of 800 million euros. Cyprus is the first country to have approved a Cohesion Policy program to access funds from the European Regional Development and Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund, the Just Transition Fund and the European Social Fund Plus.
“Cyprus is doing very well in terms of the use of these funds and we think that this new period will once again give Cyprus a good incentive to become free from fossil fuel dependence, so that development is more digital and innovative and, in fact, , to make the best use of these funds for the permanent, sustainable growth and development of the Republic of Cyprus,” said Ferreira , speaking to the press after a meeting with the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiadis.
Asked about the amount that will be allocated to Cyprus for the period of the program, the EU Commissioner said that from the Cohesion Policy funding, Cyprus will receive about 1 billion euros, “spread over various areas from infrastructure to support for biodiversity, support for small companies, innovation, digitalization and renewable sources of energy through which you can make huge progress in moving away from dependence on fossil fuels, and this benefits everyone.”
