Cavo Greco (Cape Greco) is a natural wonder of eastern Cyprus

Cape Greco, also known as Cavo Greco (Cape Greco) is one of the most picturesque and recognizable natural sites in Cyprus. Situated between the resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras , in the southeast of the island, the coastline takes the form of stone arches, cliffs, and grottoes that extend into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. More than just a tourist attraction, it’s an entire national park with unique flora, fauna, and natural landscapes that annually attracts travelers, photographers, divers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Geographical location and natural features

Cape Greco covers an area of approximately 385 hectares and is part of the Cape National Forest Park . Greco National Forest Park , a state-protected area. This is the easternmost point of Cyprus’s southern coast, a limestone plateau gradually sloping toward the sea. From the cape’s highest point (approximately 150 meters above sea level), panoramic views of Ayia Napa Bay , the bays of Protaras , and, in good weather, even the neighboring Turkish coastline open up.

The area is famous for its sea caves —natural grottoes created by erosion and wave action. Some extend tens of meters into the cliffs and are accessible only by water. The most famous are located along the western side of the cape, and are frequently visited by tour boats and divers. The water at the foot of the cliffs is incredibly clear—visibility reaches 30 meters—making this one of the best scuba diving spots in Cyprus.

History and Legends

Cape Greco is shrouded in many myths and legends. In ancient times, it housed a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite , patroness of love and the sea. Archaeological finds confirm that the cape was used for rituals and worship even in ancient times.

According to local legend, the sea caves near Cape Greco are home to the mysterious ” Ayia Napa Sea Monster , ” comparable to the Loch Ness monster . Although there is no scientific evidence to support its existence, the story of this mythical creature has become part of local folklore and attracts tourists, especially families with children.

National Park and Routes

The Cape Gkreko area was declared a national park in 1993. It boasts over 10 hiking and cycling trails , ranging from 1.5 to 8 kilometers in length. They run along coastal paths, through rocky areas, among pine trees, junipers, and wild grasses. In spring, the park is covered in a carpet of flowers, including rare orchids and endemic plants found only in Cyprus.

The most popular routes:

  • Nature Trail Aphrodite is a walking route connecting archaeological sites and observation platforms, dedicated to the myths of the goddess Aphrodite.
  • Sea Caves Trail – a path along the sea grottoes, with several descents to the water and observation points.
  • Agioi Anargyroi Trail is a route leading to the Church of the Holy Unmercenary Healers of the same name and to a small cave with a spring.

Attractions and observation decks

The main natural attraction of the cape is the Bridge of Lovers ( Love The Bridge is a natural rock arch overhanging the sea. It’s one of the most popular photo spots in Cyprus, especially at sunset. Legend has it that if a couple kisses on the bridge, their love will last forever.

Another iconic site are the sea caves . Some are accessible for swimming or snorkeling , while others can be observed from above. Tourist boats from Ayia Napa often stop here, allowing travelers to dive directly from the cliffs.

At the top of the park is an observation deck with a gazebo and the Cypriot flag , offering panoramic views of the entire coastline. You can also see a lighthouse, operational since the 19th century, and an old radio station from the British era.

Active recreation

Cape Greco is one of the best places in Cyprus for diving, snorkeling , and kayaking . The underwater landscape is diverse: underwater caves, cliffs, and coral reefs create impressive views. Quad biking and cycling along dirt trails are also popular , and for adrenaline junkies, cliff diving is available — safe only in designated areas with sufficient depth.

In recent years, Cape Greco has become a centre for ecotourism, offering educational tours, bike rides and conservation events.

How to get there

Cape Greco is easily reached by car or bike from Ayia Napa (approximately 10 minutes) or Protaras (15-20 minutes). Regular buses run between the resorts, but it’s more convenient to explore the most picturesque spots on your own. For walks in the park, it’s best to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and a hat—summer temperatures can reach 35°C.

Best time to visit

Cape Greco is a popular destination year-round. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather for walking, while summer is perfect for swimming and snorkeling . In winter, the park is especially popular among photographers and travelers who prefer the tranquility and mild climate. Sunsets at the cape are considered some of the most beautiful in Cyprus—the sun sets just below the sea horizon, painting the sky pink and gold.

Ecological value

Cape Greco is included in the Natura 2000 program , a network of protected natural areas across Europe. It is home to rare species of birds, reptiles, and marine animals, as well as numerous endemic plants. Ecosystem protection is a priority for local authorities, so littering, lighting fires, and cutting down plants are prohibited in the park.

Cape Greco (Cavo Greco) is a place where the power of nature, mythology, and the serene beauty of the sea merge. Here you can experience the spirit of pristine Cyprus, walk along the paths of Aphrodite, descend to sea caves, and watch the sunrise over the boundless Mediterranean. The park is suitable for both active travelers and those seeking peace and quiet away from the bustling resorts.

A visit to Cape Greco leaves a lasting impression: it is not just a dot on the map, but a symbol of the harmony between man and nature, a place where everyone finds inspiration.
