The total value of assets under management (AUM) of collective funds decreased by 3.9% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the previous quarter, while management companies and collective investment enterprises (UCI), controlled by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, continued to grow. In the first quarter of 2022, CySEC controlled 322 management companies and collective investment enterprises (UCIs), 235 of which are active. Specifically, it oversees 206 externally administered UCIs, 44 internally administered UCIs, and 72 external fund managers. The total number of operating companies includes 41 AIFMs, 66 sub-threshold AIFMs, 4 UCITS operating companies and 5 dual licensed entities (AIFM and UCITS operating companies).
In terms of investment policy, UCITS 84.6% was invested in transferable securities, followed by investment in bank deposits with 8.1% and investment in UCITS and UCI with 5.8%. CySEC added that AIF, AIFLNP and RAIF invest primarily in private equity with a share of 39.1%, while investment in hedge funds accounts for 11.4% of AUM.
The total number of active UCIS was 203. Representing 80.4% of the total number of AUMs, there are 184 UCIs registered in Cyprus (12 UCITS, 59 AIF, 58 AIFLNP and 55 RAIF).
Out of a total of 203 UCIs managed by UCI Management Companies, 156 invest wholly or partly in Cyprus and €2.5bn ( 22.5%) are investments made in Cyprus.
Of the investments in Cyprus, 66.3% are private equity and 12.4% of investments in Cyprus are real estate.
The majority of UCITs are retail investors (99.2%), while among AIFs, AIFNLPs and RAIFs, 30.7% are professional investors, 57.4% are well-informed investors and only 11.9% are retail investors.
In terms of specific sectors in which UCI invested, in Q1 2022 AUM in the energy sector was €346.2 million (3.117% of total AUM), while €28.8 million was invested in fintech (0.259% of total AUM). , €82.5M in shipping (0.742% of total assets), €36.9M in sustainability (0.332% of total assets) and € 9M in cryptocurrencies (0.081% of total assets).
