Archaeological research in Akamas : cultural heritage and development of the region

Recent archaeological research in the Akamas region is opening a new page in the study of early prehistory in Cyprus. The examination of the Drusea-Skloinikia site, led by scientists from the University of Cyprus and the German Archaeological Institute, has revealed artefacts that change the understanding of the cultural significance of the area in antiquity.

The discovered objects date back to the end of the Pleistocene – beginning of the Holocene (12–8 thousand years ago) and include:

  • stone tools;
  • for stone dishes;
  • beads, shells and bones.

The project was carried out within the framework of the MIGRATE programme, funded by the Republic of Cyprus and the European Regional Development Fund. The in-depth research included a geophysical scan of the 1,720 square metre site and excavations in five zones. The finds included charcoal remains of wood, which will be sent for radiocarbon dating to confirm the age of the artefacts. A very unusual find discovered at the excavation site probably indicates hunting activity in the area.

Akamas is a region where large infrastructure projects are being actively implemented. Archaeological discoveries highlight the need to take historical heritage into account when planning construction. Combining the preservation of natural and cultural resources with modern development is a key factor in the ecological approach to the development of this territory.

The discovered artefacts enhance our understanding of the early history of Cyprus, raising new questions for future research. The archaeological heritage of the Akamas Peninsula once again highlights the importance of integrating cultural values into the process of modern development.
