An oasis for Larnaca’s commercial center will be Zuchuri Square, which is expected to be completed around the end of September. The renovation of the building complex is in its final stages, and the result, according to the mayor of Larnaca, is impressive.
The complex of buildings Zuchuri, consisting of a mosque and a former Turkish-Cypriot market, is one of the most important ancient monuments of Larnaca. The project includes renovation of the yard, including the area of the former Turkish Cypriot market, maintenance of the guest house located on the floor of the buildings near the mosque, as well as restoration of the facades of all buildings .
“This is a hidden treasure that is about to be revealed. The beauty of the area is incredible and with the completion of the Municipal Market, the shopping center will be given new life,” said Andreas Vyras, noting that there were justified delays in the completion of the project.
The delays were due to stability issues with the dormitory and driveway, which had been closed for decades. Therefore, for their restoration, it was necessary to obtain a special permit from the Department of Antiquities.
The aim of the project is the functional and aesthetic improvement of the space and the connection of the courtyard with the surrounding area and the road network of the area. The layout of the courtyard was done in such a way as to emphasize the historical and traditional character of the mosque area, in order to attract both Larnaca residents and foreign visitors.
There will be four stores in the area for which the municipality will apply, but existing stores near the Zouchuri complex will also be able to place tables and chairs in a specially designed space.
The estimated cost of the project is 2.9 million euros and will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Program Competitiveness and Sustainable Development.
