Airports in Cyprus: Larnaca, Paphos

Cyprus welcomes several million visitors from around the world each year. The number of people arriving throughout the year exceeds the population of Cyprus itself, including not only tourists but also business professionals investing on the island. There are seven airports in Cyprus, four of which serve civilian needs, while the others have military status and are used by the air forces of Cyprus, Greece, and the United Kingdom.

The civilian airports are located in different parts of the island, within the main resort areas of the country, allowing travelers to choose a destination that is closest to their vacation spot. The main international airports, receiving visitors from around the globe, are located in Paphos and Larnaca. Additionally, there are two airports in the northern part of Cyprus, with Ercan being the most popular. Let’s take a closer look at these airports.

Larnaca Airport

This is the largest airport in Cyprus, located in the southern part of the island, handling about 3.5 million guests annually. It has international status and operates the majority of regular flights from leading global airlines, as well as charter flights and official flights.

The airport was built relatively recently (in 2009) on the site of a former military airfield and is conveniently located near major resorts on the island. Larnaca is just a 10-minute drive away, Ayia Napa is 40 minutes away, Protaras and Nicosia are 50 minutes away, and Limassol is about an hour away.

From the airport, you can reach these cities by taxi (costing around 50-55 euros) or by hotel transfer, which is more expensive. There is also a nearby bus stop with routes to major resorts in Cyprus. A popular way to travel from the airport and explore the country is by renting a car from companies like Avis or Eurocar.

Paphos Airport

This is the second most important airport in Cyprus, also with international status. It is located 16 kilometers from the resort town of Paphos. While smaller than Larnaca Airport and with a lower passenger volume (about 2.5 million people per year), it offers excellent service and infrastructure. The airport mainly handles charter flights and low-cost carriers.

From here, you can take a bus to Paphos and then transfer to another route to reach your destination. However, taking a taxi is more convenient and faster, with taxis readily available at the airport. The trip to Limassol takes about an hour and costs around 50 euros, while the journey to Protaras takes about two hours, costing approximately 160 euros. Alternatively, you can rent a car at the airport from one of the rental companies or use a transfer service.
