A new pedestrian bridge over the Karkotis River was officially opened in the Kalianos area. The ceremony took place on Saturday with the participation of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Public Works of Cyprus, Alex Vafeadis.
This infrastructure project is very important for the local population. Until now, residents crossed the river on an old narrow stone bridge built in 45 AD, which raised concerns about road safety. The new bridge is built parallel to the historical structure and provides a safe and comfortable connection between the two banks.
According to the minister, the project’s implementation not only addresses security issues, but also promotes social integration, strengthening the connection between residents. “This is not just an infrastructure facility. This is a project that connects people and creates conditions for improving their daily lives,” he noted.
The construction of the bridge is of particular importance for areas with mountainous terrain, where local residents often face limited accessibility and difficulties in movement. In this regard, the state prioritizes improving living conditions in such regions.
Continuing on the topic, the Minister stressed that the government has already developed an action plan for all districts, including taking into account the needs of various communities. The document was prepared by the Commissioner for Mountainous Areas and is currently being implemented in practice.
